GOOGLE IN MASSIVE STAFF LAYOFFS

Google is laying off most of the staff working on its digital assistant, the hardware and engineering teams to cut costs, the company revealed.

Affected are those working on the voice-based Google Assistant, the reality hardware team and workers at the central engineering. This layoff that started in 2023 is expected to continue in the following years.

POPE CALLS FOR BAN ON SURROGATE MOTHERHOOD

Pope Francis has called for a global ban on surrogate motherhood. The leader of the Roman Catholics equated the practise to child trafficking while meeting with ambassadors to the Vatican. 

Surrogate motherhood is a practice used by single persons, unfertile or same-sex couples to bear children.

The Pope said, 

“I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs.”  He added that “A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract. Consequently, I express my hope for an effort by the international community to prohibit this practice universally." Francis stated in a written document.

Many people including celebrities like Michael Jackson have used surrogates to bear offsprings. The practise has been commercialised and is usually affordable to the well-to-do.

ISRAEL KILLS HAMAS OFFICIAL IN BEIRUT

An explosion in Beirut killed Saleh Arouri, a senior Hamas official, the group said. 

A U.S. defense official said the Israel Defense Forces was responsible for a strike targeting Arouri, and that an assessment of whether he had been killed was ongoing. 

Hamas responded by saying Israel is carrying out “cowardly assassinations" and promised to retaliate.

 Israel Defence Forces declined to comment.
